Man killed for disliking a band in Durango, Mexico?
I went to Durango this summer with some spanish speaking friends (i understand well enough to get the idea, but not really to get the exact details) They told a story of a guy who was killed for expressing a dislike towards a band from the area (pretty sure he wrote an article about a band from Durango and was then killed in Durango).. but i want to know the whole story! Any duranguenses with any details- like the band name, the city, maybe a newspaper article?? gracias!

There have been several murders and retaliation killings in Mexico in the last few years related to bands/singers.
The singer for K-Paz was killed and one of the members of Montez de Durango was killed. I heard that these two were related, but I’m not sure of the details.
The singer Valentin Elizalde (el gallo de oro) was ambushed and killed (along with his body guard and driver) not far from his family’s home near Navojoa. The story that I heard is that some narcos were pressuring him and he wouldn’t do what they wanted. He released a song called ‘a mis enemigos’ (to my enemies) that has some very unmistakabley critical lyrics (this is for the whole ball of envious people, the dogs keep barking – a sign that I am advancing, that’s how the saying goes to the people who talk bad about those of us who work instead of screwing off) and even threats (with me, don’t screw around – I have a big gun, and I’ve got you in my sights). Although I don’t hear any clear indicators of exactly who he is refering to in the song – somebody did.
He was killed for releasing this song. Mexican authorities believe that the narcotraficantes ambushed his vehicle as he was headed home to visit his parents after a concert. The three men in the vehicle were all shot several times, Elizalde’s body was in a position that indicated he tried to flee the vehicle before he died. The murder occurred within a very short distance of his family’s home.
On a more personal note, a cousin of my ex-husbands was killed in a small town for being a good soccer player. He had been the star player on the local team and received a scholarship to a University in Oaxaca for his skill. He had come home for a visit and went to a local cantina with some friends. Some guys picked a fight with him with an arguement about soccer, beer bottles were broken, and the other guy was thrown out of the bar – but not without making some threats which everyone heard. The guys waited for him to be walking home, and in the dark, tree-lined driveway of his house, they attacked him with machetes. They first hacked the back of his knees so he couldn’t run – but he did anyway. He was cut by the machetes in at least a dozen locations, including his neck and face. His own mother found him dead in the street outside her home that morning.
Unfortunately, this is not really all that uncommon an experience. And, worse, the police can’t or won’t do much about it (both instances are sometimes true).
In the case of the cousin, the whole town knew who did it – but he couldn’t be found and the accomlices first denied any involvement but then took off within a day or two. Word is the guy came back to the US illegally to avoid justice in his home town. But I can gaurantee that if anyone of the deceased’s family runs across him, he will likely suffer a similar fate as his victim.
There’s a saying, “favors, with favors are repaid” – like ‘you reap what you sow’
I don’t think this is right, it’s just how it is.
