Cabo San Lucas VS San Jose Los Cabos?

I’m getting ready to go on my honeymoon and we are looking at an all inclusive resort. What is an economical resort and which city should be closer to? I want to go into town, at least, one day and my husband would like to go fishing. What is the difference between the two cities? We are looking for “the best bang for our buck.”

Hola! Well I can sure help you with this! The best way to start is to tell you what the differences are.

The whole area is called Los Cabos. It is broken down into two towns – Cabo San Lucas CSL and San Jose del Cabo SJD, with the area in between called “the corridor” basically a four lane highway with a bunch of resorts along it, each on their own private beach.

San Jose del Cabo is closer to the airport. It is the more quainter, quieter side of Los Cabos. Most of the resorts (Crowne Plaza, Royal Solaris, El Presidente, Barcelo, Mayan Palace, Costa Azul) are located on the beach called Costa Azul, a gigantic stretch of sand that goes forever. Great for walking, horseback riding, water sports etc. Can be a little rough for swimming, but there are specific areas that are great for surfing or shore fishing. These are all about a 5 minute stroll into town. The narrow streets of SJD offer tons of shopping, lots of very nice restaurants, art galleries, etc. You can hire any kind of activity here….ATVing sand dunes to day snorkel trips to Chileno or Santa Maria bay. I live in this town and love it.

CSL is the crazy, wilder side of Los Cabos. Most of the resorts (Riu Palace or Sante Fe, Pueblo Bonitos, Villas del mar, del arco, estancia, ME Melia, Solmar, etc) are located near the main downtown marina/shopping area but you might need a $5 taxi as it may be a little farther to walk. There are nightclubs that party all night long, as well as all the same shopping and activities as I mentioned in SJD. Here you can really people watch, but also expect crowds and chaos!

If you stay in SJD, you can daytrip to CSL without too much hassle, by getting an easy bus into town or taking a shuttle from your resort.

Both towns now have marina facilities, but the marina in CSL is more established and easier to book fishing trips at. I’ve booked out of both but prefer to go to Gordo Banks now (SJD) and just rent a panga and captain to take me out for a few hours. Its a great cheap fun way to try fishing.

The “Corridor” is between the two towns and each resort (Westin Regina, Marquis, Palmilla, Melia Real, Dreams,Hilton, etc) is isolated but very popular with honeymooners, as some just want a fancy room and when they do emerge they want to just chill and lay by the pool, maybe get a spa treatment.

All the resorts I mentioned are 5 star. Some are all inclusive. The Riu’s are your most economical…crowne and royal are second. We are very lucky here in Cabo, most of our places are very nice and you will enjoy your stay no matter what you pick. Have a great holiday.
